What is the truth about black fungus disease?
The black fungus is not black in color as it is said, but it was called this name because it causes the tissues that it affects to turn black, and it is one of the worst types of fungi of the nose and sinuses. Mucous or organs turn black with a very unpleasant odor felt by those in contact with the patient and not the patient himself.
A fungal disease that affects humans as a side effect of the deterioration of the level of the immune system, but it is rare and usually affects the mucous membranes lining the sinuses, eyes, nose, mouth, teeth or facial bones.
The fungi may also spread to the lungs, the digestive system, or even the blood vessels, and it can also occur on the skin when a cut, burn, or other injury occurs to the skin.
The type that affects the nasal mucosa remains and may extend to the brain, and the type that affects the lung is the most common type.
Other less common types are skin infections and gastrointestinal tract infections.
As for the fungi that cause the disease, they are some types of fungi that belong to the family of molds, which live in moist environments such as soil or decomposing organic materials such as leaves or fertilizers, or wood, and those fungi are called mucous fungi.
The report mentioned the sources of infection, which are heat-resistant fungi, and they are found in the environment, and studies conducted with environmental samples indicate that these fungi are commonly found in the soil, but it is rarely found in air samples that are tested for the presence of fungal spores.
The routes of transmission occur through inhalation, contact and ingestion.
As for people who are susceptible to infection with the black fungus, they are:
Patients with uncontrolled diabetes affected by its severe complications, especially diabetic coma associated with acidosis.
Cancer patients in late-stage cases
AIDS patients
Patients who have received organ transfusions or stem cell transfusions.
A severe drop in the number of white blood cells
Prolonged, excessive use of cortisone
Injected drug addicts
Burns, surgeries and wounds
Premature babies and low-weight newborns
The report stated that the transmission of infection inside the health facility occurs through inhaling fungi from the damp, unclean environment inside the health facility, and through the provision of medical services related to health care, such as “using unsterilized water loaded with mushrooms during oxygen sessions, not maintaining air conditioners and filters, and using medical devices. Not sterilized. "
Infection with the black fungus also occurs through contact through the combined use of bandages and wooden tongue depressors without following contamination methods, hospital furnishings, unsafe handling of surfaces contaminated with dust and dirt, and then contact with exposed patients.
Transmission can also occur by means of ingestion of infectious fungi.
The report emphasized that the black fungus is a non-contagious disease and is not transmitted from person to person or between humans and animals.
Prevention of black fungus disease
1- Avoid exposure to places that conta
in dust and dirt such as construction sites, and in the event that it is not possible to do so, then a N95 mask must be worn. 2- Avoid direct exposure to water-affected buildings such as floods and natural disasters 3- Stay away from activities that require Direct contact with soil or dust, such as working in cultivating the land, and if a person cannot do so, then he must wear shoes, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts when doing outdoor activities.
